Marketing is about

• identifying what a customer wants or needs
• working out how to meet that need
• delivering the solution effectively and profitably.

Done properly, it makes the whole selling process easier.

Marketing is not just advertising or PR (though both those activities should be a part of a Marketing Plan.) Marketing should also cover:

• research
• setting objectives
• planning how you’re going to achieve those objectives
• tracking your performance and seeing how you’re doing.

In other words:

• Identify and measure your own strengths & weaknesses, opportunities & threats, your resources, customers, plans, and competitors.
• Understand your customer - who are they, where are they, what they want, what their pains are that you can solve.
• Define the market – size, trends, and things that are affecting it
• Decide your objectives and the marketing strategies that will achieve them
• Plan the activities which will put those strategies into effect, including your Marketing Communications plan for promoting your product or service (that's where PR and advertising, as well as other promotional activity, comes in)
• Track and measure so you know when you've achieved what you wanted.

Your Marketing Plan is a living document and should be

• updated regularly
• reflected in everything you do
